So the 2010 World Series matchup is set!
For the first time in a while, the World Series is guaranteed to produce a winner that is not one of baseball's perennial powers such as the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, or Cardinals. What a breath of fresh air!!
This year's Series features the San Francisco Giants, who have not won a title since 1954, when they were still the New York Giants. And opposing them is the Texas Rangers, a franchise which had never even won a playoff series in their entire history prior to this year, let alone made it to the World Series.
It's also refreshing to see such great story lines. Texas slugger Josh Hamilton (former Red by the way), who has overcome serious drug and alcohol addictions to become one of the best hitters in baseball and a possible MVP. Giants pitcher Matt Cain, who has been one of the most underrated players in baseball over the last 5 years, finally getting his due. Giants catcher Buster Posey almost single-handedly turning this team into a winner as a rookie. And of course, Rangers owner and president Nolan Ryan, who struggled his whole playing career to make it to the Fall Classic, finally seeing his patience and support of his team go rewarded.
This reminds me a bit of the 2005 series, which saw the Chicago White Sox (who had not won since 1919) defeat the Houston Astros (who were making their first-ever trip to the Series). Finally, fans in a city that has never celebrated a championship will get to savor the experience.
So this year, whichever team wins, everyone wins!
Play ball!!
